India’s journey over the past 10 years has been marked by significant advancements in infrastructure, reflecting its aspirations of becoming a developed nation by 2047. From modern highways to robust digital connectivity, these developments have been instrumental in fostering economic growth, enhancing global competitiveness, and improving the quality of life for millions.
Mobility and transportation
In transportation, road connectivity has improved through the Bharatmala Pariyojana, with over 50,000 kilometers of national highways constructed and key expressways like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, and Bangalore-Chennai Expressway completed or under development.
Railways have seen extensive electrification, modernisation, and the introduction of semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains, along with dedicated freight corridors to enhance cargo transport efficiency.
The Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik or Udan scheme has bolstered regional air connectivity, resulting in over 100 new operational airports and the development of Greenfield projects like Jewar and Mopa airports.
The Sagarmala Project has focused on port-led development, modernizing India’s 13 major and 200+ minor ports to boost coastal shipping.
Housing infrastructure
Urban infrastructure has grown with the Smart Cities Mission, which has improved governance, ICT-enabled services, and sustainable urban planning in 100 cities, while metro rail networks have expanded in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, along with the introduction of Regional Rapid Transit Systems connecting urban and suburban areas.
Affordable housing initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana have provided millions of homes in both urban and rural areas.
Energy and water
In energy, India’s renewable capacity now exceeds 175 gw, supported by projects like the Bhadla Solar Park and global initiatives such as One Sun, One World, One Grid and the International Solar Alliance.
Water and sanitation efforts have been transformed through the Jal Jeevan Mission, which provides tap water to rural households, and the Swachh Bharat Mission, which has significantly improved sanitation across the country.
Digital network
Digital infrastructure has expanded through the BharatNet Project, which brought high-speed internet to over 2.5 lakh gram panchayats, and advancements in 5G and fiber-optic networks.
Industrial and economic corridors like the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor, alongside logistics hubs and SEZs, have further boosted economic growth.
Healthcare infrastructure has also advanced, with the construction of AIIMS-like institutions across states and upgrades to facilities under Ayushman Bharat.
These developments highlight India’s focus on sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking infrastructure projects, reflecting its ambitions for economic growth and global competitiveness.
