India and Denmark Strengthen Renewable Energy Cooperation Through International Solar Alliance Initiatives

The discussions, led by Indian Ambassador to Denmark Manish Prabhat, ISA Director General Ajay Mathur, and Director General-elect Praveen Khanna, focused on leveraging contributions from both countries for a sustainable energy future.

The Indian Embassy in Copenhagen shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), noting the emphasis on “ISA’s Sustainable Renewable Energy initiatives attracting global funding and technology, including from India and Denmark.”

Denmark and India have long been partners in advancing clean energy efforts, highlighted by Denmark’s signing of the framework agreement on the ISA in 2021, making it the first country to ratify the International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement. This collaboration was further deepened through joint efforts during India’s G20 presidency, where Denmark actively participated in working groups focused on climate change, environmental sustainability, and energy transitions as part of the Green Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

High-Level Conference on Clean Energy Transition

One of the key milestones in this collaboration was the third edition of the High-Level Conference on New Technologies for Clean Energy Transition, organized by the ISA in November 2024. The event, held in cooperation with India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Asian Development Bank, and the International Solar Energy Society, provided a platform for global discussions on innovative clean energy solutions.

A significant highlight of the conference was the release of the report titled ‘Readiness Assessment of Green Hydrogen African Countries,’ jointly prepared by ISA and Denmark. The report evaluates the potential for green hydrogen development in four African nations—Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa.

Insights on the Green Hydrogen Report

During the event, Emil S. Lauritsen, Head of Strategic Sector Cooperation at the Embassy of Denmark in New Delhi, shared insights on the report, calling it a crucial step under the Memorandum of Understanding for the green hydrogen partnership signed between Denmark and the ISA.

“This report is the first project under the umbrella of the MoU for the green hydrogen partnership. It aims to assess the readiness of the target countries—Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa—by focusing on country-specific parameters, financing requirements, and possible financing methods,” Lauritsen said.

The report also delves into risk assessments and planning strategies for developing green hydrogen economies in the targeted countries. “The findings will help lay the foundation for sustainable green hydrogen development, offering actionable recommendations for policy formulation and investment opportunities,” Lauritsen added.

Long-Term Green Hydrogen Collaboration

Under this partnership, Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide ISA with three years of support, with a focus on policy development, regulation, and building a comprehensive green hydrogen value chain. Lauritsen emphasized that Denmark’s contribution would cover various components critical to advancing green hydrogen technology and scaling production to meet global demand.

India and Denmark’s collaboration in the ISA reflects their mutual commitment to accelerating the global clean energy transition while sharing expertise in green hydrogen, solar energy, and sustainability efforts. As both countries continue to work together, they aim to foster innovation and create replicable models that can be adapted in other regions worldwide.
