A unique golden tribute

NEW DELHI: EK Safar Hamsafar ke Sath, by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, is an engrossing saga of the life and times of the author with his esteemed spouse, Panadevi, over more than 50 years. It is a unique golden tribute and offering of a devout husband to his loving, inspiring, and accommodating wife, quite unlike the usual tying of strings of festoons and balloons along with the ceremonial cutting of the cake. The book encapsulates the secrets of a happy married life, drawing on the couple’s shared life experiences.

One of the abiding images of the book is of the couple, on their 25th wedding anniversary in 1993, coincidentally, travelling on a scooter to attend the 50th anniversary of another couple, when the resolve to write the book took shape. Coincidentally, again, their wedding anniversary in 2025, according to the Hindu (auspicious Buddha Poornima) and the Gregorian calendar, fell on the same day, i.e. May 12.

Beginning of journey The journey begins with the traditional Indian search for a bridegroom, culminating in the marriage, rich in rituals. It is a story of adjustments with and support for one another, from all sides, which form the firm and strong foundation of a happy conjugal life. It describes various ups and downs, which are not uncommon in most families, and shows how to deal with them.

The author’s wife, Panadevi, always came out with creative solutions at every turn of events, leading to positive outcomes. She always showed firmness, determination, mental strength, and patience. Humour often played an important role in diffusing tense situations. She always performed all household chores, including looking after the relatives and guests, with a lot of enthusiasm. There are many instances that amply demonstrate Panadevi’s good nature, self-confidence, and humanism. Her multifaceted personality includes skills in Handicrafts as well, which has won the acclaim of many. She has also exhibited her administrative capabilities in managing the affairs of Bhavana Memorial Trust.

Bureaucratic career

The book also traces the history of the author’s career as a civil servant, starting as a telephone operator and culminating as an IAS officer, with due encouragement and support from his wife. In politics, Panadevi’s overall persona, particularly her inherent humility, in spite of being the spouse of a dignitary, has greatly endeared her to author’s constituents. This has immensely benefitted the advancement of his political career, comprising four consecutive Lok Sabha terms.

The book concludes with a travelogue, describing some exciting and adventurous times spent by the couple, while travelling together. The sum and substance of this tribute has been beautifully captured in its dedication. It states that we have been made for each other. My heart should match yours. My mind should match yours. My speech should match your speech and our intellect should remain united.

That is the way to improve India’s Happiness Index rank.
