300.50 GW, and Solar Added 44.6 of It Last Year

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: India’s non-fossil installed generation capacity was 300.50 GW on 31 July 2026 — just over 60 per cent of the 500 GW committed for 2030, and more than 54 per cent of a total installed base of roughly 552 GW. Solar contributed 164.59 GW of that, after a record 44.6 GW added in 2025-26 alone.

For an investor the composition is the signal. Wind stands at 57.44 GW and large hydro at 57.24 GW, both broadly flat as a share; solar has done essentially all of the incremental work. A single-year addition of 44.6 GW is larger than the entire installed solar fleet of most G20 economies, and it implies a module, inverter, EPC and land-acquisition pipeline operating at a run rate that did not exist three years ago. India ranks third globally in installed renewable capacity.

Solar did the running: 164.59 GW of India’s 300.50 GW non-fossil capacity is solar, against 2.8 GW in 2014, with a record 44.6 GW added in 2025-26.

The generation curve and the demand curve do not overlap. Everything interesting in this sector for the next five years lives in that mismatch.

At a Glance

• Non-fossil capacity: 300.50 GW as on 31 July 2026
• Progress to 2030 target: just over 60 per cent of 500 GW
• Solar: 164.59 GW (2.8 GW in 2014)
• Wind: 57.44 GW · Large hydro: 57.24 GW
• Total installed capacity: approximately 552 GW
• Non-fossil share of capacity: above 54 per cent
• Record solar addition: 44.6 GW in 2025-26
• Global rank in renewable capacity: third

The professional caveat is standard and should be stated every time this figure is quoted: capacity is nameplate, not output. Solar runs at a capacity utilisation factor in the high teens to low twenties in Indian conditions; a coal unit can be dispatched at any hour. A 54 per cent non-fossil share of capacity therefore corresponds to a materially smaller share of units generated, and the evening peak — when solar has gone and demand has not — remains substantially thermal. Anyone modelling merit-order economics or discom cash flows on the capacity number alone will get the wrong answer.

That mismatch is precisely where the next investment cycle sits. Battery energy storage tenders, pumped-hydro projects, inter-State transmission capacity and firm-and-dispatchable renewable contracts are the instruments that convert nameplate into deliverable power, and they are the segments with the clearest revenue visibility over the next five years. India’s structural advantage is timing: it is building the storage and transmission layer while the renewable fleet is still young, rather than retrofitting it onto a mature one at far higher cost, which is the position several European grids now find themselves in. The 500 GW target is likely to be met on capacity. Whether it is met on delivered electricity is a transmission and storage question, and that is where the capital should be looking.
