The Sunday Business Capsule

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: The number of the week was $729.33 billion, and the way it was built matters more than its size. On Friday 28 August the Reserve Bank reported foreign exchange reserves at that level for the week ended 21 August, up $12.42 billion in seven days and the highest on record. Set it against the $716.907 billion reported a week earlier and the arithmetic closes exactly. What is unusual is the source. Since June the Reserve Bank has operated a special US dollar–rupee swap window designed to pull in overseas deposits and foreign-currency borrowing, and by 21 August banks had raised $72.85 billion through it — of which Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) deposits accounted for $65.4 billion. That is not hot portfolio money. FCNR(B) deposits carry fixed tenors, sit on bank balance sheets and cannot leave on a Tuesday afternoon because a foreign central bank moved a decimal. India has, deliberately, changed the quality of its reserve accretion and not merely the quantity.

Inside the reserves, gold rose $2.80 billion to $114.22 billion — 15.7% of the total, on our computation. Special Drawing Rights stood at $18.85 billion, up $112 million, and the reserve position in the International Monetary Fund at $4.93 billion, up $26 million. In rupee terms the reserves are ₹69.81 lakh crore. For an importer, a treasurer or a rating committee the relevant question is import cover and rollover risk, and on both counts the week moved in one direction only.

Equities did not join in. The Sensex closed Friday at 77,265.00 and the Nifty 50 at 24,175.65. Both rose on the day — the Sensex by about 331 points, or 0.43% — on the back of an information technology rally, with Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra and Infosys leading; both nonetheless finished lower across the week, the third consecutive weekly decline, on caution ahead of the United States Federal Reserve Chair’s remarks and on unease about a new closing-auction mechanism. On our own computation from last week’s closes, the Sensex shed 275.83 points, or 0.36%, and the Nifty 76.35 points, or 0.31%. Foreign portfolio investors, meanwhile, kept buying: NSDL depository data on 27 August put net FPI equity inflows for August at ₹27,186 crore, up from ₹23,544 crore reported to 23 August — roughly ₹3,642 crore added in four sessions. Foreign investors were buying the market that domestic sentiment was selling.

Three corporate and policy items are worth a treasurer’s attention. Larsen & Toubro booked an ultra-mega gas compression contract in West Asia above ₹15,000 crore on 24 August; Adani Energy Solutions won the ₹4,700 crore transmission link for the Satara pumped-storage project on 26 August; and Godrej Industries Group signed a ₹20,000 crore memorandum with Haryana on 24 August. On 28 August SEBI cleared India’s largest-ever public issue, which will reset the scale of the domestic primary market. And on 26 August a working paper for the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister put the technical efficiency of public sector banks at 93.12% for 2025-26 — a number that, more than any speech, prices the decade of balance-sheet repair behind the current credit cycle. The week’s real test arrives on Monday, when the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation publishes first-quarter GDP.

The Sector Diary — Eighteen Fields, Read Through the Ledger

01 Governance & the Union Cabinet

• 25 August — PMO. The 53rd PRAGATI meeting reviewed six infrastructure projects across nine States. PRAGATI’s value to a contractor is not the review itself but the clearance dates that follow it; project-level delay is the single largest hidden cost in Indian infrastructure bidding.

• 25 August — Ministry of Home Affairs. The 9th National Security Strategies Conference closed after two days and more than 850 officers, with a timetable set for full rollout of the three new criminal laws — a compliance calendar for every business with a fraud or contract-enforcement exposure.

• 29 August — PMO and MEA. The Prime Minister departed for Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Central Asia matters to Indian trade chiefly through connectivity and critical minerals; watch the Tashkent and Bishkek documents for both.

02 Economy, GDP & Public Finance

• 28 August — Reserve Bank of India. Reserves at a record $729.33 billion for the week ended 21 August, up $12.42 billion, ₹69.81 lakh crore in rupee terms. The accretion is deposit-led rather than portfolio-led, which changes its rollover profile.

• 28 August — Central Board of Direct Taxes. Seven crore income tax returns filed for the assessment year, largely voluntary and ahead of deadline — the widening of the direct tax base is now a structural, not cyclical, story.

• 26 August — Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. A working paper put public sector bank technical efficiency at 93.12% for FY 2025-26, with a costing of the recovery rate achieved over the repair decade.

03 Markets, Banking & Insurance

• 28 August — BSE and NSE. Sensex 77,265.00, Nifty 50 24,175.65. Both up on Friday, led by IT — TCS, Tech Mahindra and Infosys the strongest large caps — and both lower across the week for a third consecutive week. Weekly changes recomputed here: −275.83 points and −76.35 points respectively.

• 27 August — NSDL. Net FPI equity inflows of ₹27,186 crore for August, up from ₹23,544 crore to 23 August. Foreign buying continued through a week of domestic caution.

• 28 August — SEBI. India’s largest-ever public issue received the regulator’s observations, clearing the path to a listing that will change the size distribution of the domestic primary market.

• 28 August — Department of Financial Services. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed twelve years. For lenders the relevant number is not accounts opened but the deposit float and the DBT rail those accounts now carry.

• 28 August — insurance sector. Aggregate insurance coverage in the country reached a record level on the latest reported data — the protection gap narrowing, slowly, from a very wide base.

04 Industry, Manufacturing & MSME

• 24 August — Larsen & Toubro. An ultra-mega gas compression contract in West Asia above ₹15,000 crore — the largest single order category in L&T’s hydrocarbon book and a margin question worth watching at the next results.

• 24 August — Government of Haryana. Godrej Industries Group signed an MoU for about ₹20,000 crore. A memorandum is an intention, not capital expenditure; the test is the first drawdown.

• 25 August — Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys. The greenfield ferro chrome expansion at Kalinganagar (KNR-1) began production, adding domestic capacity in an alloy India both makes and exports.

• 25 August — Ministry of MSME. A ‘Parishrama Adalat’ at Hyderabad settled 65 delayed-payment cases worth ₹8.29 crore — an average of about ₹12.75 lakh a case. Delayed receivables remain the single largest working-capital constraint on Indian micro enterprise.

• 26 August — Godrej Consumer Products. A fourth manufacturing unit opened at Malanpur, Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, thirty-five years after the first.

05 Trade, Exports & FTAs

• 24–27 August — Ministry of Commerce & Industry. India’s largest-ever business delegation to Japan — about two hundred firms — pitched India as a data-centre destination, sought long-term Japanese institutional capital and outlined a BIS-exemption framework for high-technology manufacturing inputs.

• 25 August — DGFT. Wheat-flour exports freed; specified wheat and durum wheat moved from prohibited to free. Milling margins and port logistics both reprice on a notification of this kind.

• 27 August — Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The 7th India–Morocco Joint Commission concluded at Rabat — market access, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, customs and digital cooperation. Merchandise trade was near $4 billion in 2025.

• 28 August — Ministry of Defence. Defence export authorisation widened from a list of forty-one countries to all destinations, subject to end-use conditions — a material change to the addressable market for Indian defence suppliers.

06 Infrastructure, Transport & Urban Development

• 27 August — Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. JNPA reported as the world’s fastest-growing container port, now 21st globally. Growth ranking, not size ranking — the relevant read for shipping lines allocating capacity.

• 29 August — Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. Four Char Dham tunnels fitted with lighting and ventilation, extending the usable season of a route whose economics depend entirely on how many months it is open.

• 29 August — Government of Jammu & Kashmir. About ₹1,500 crore of rural road work commenced in the Jammu hills, covering roughly 600 kilometres — about ₹2.5 crore a kilometre on our computation, reflecting hill-terrain cost.

07 Energy, Renewables & Climate

• 26 August — Adani Energy Solutions. The ₹4,700 crore Satara pumped-storage evacuation link. Transmission, not generation, is now the binding constraint on Indian renewable additions, and it is where the returns are regulated and visible.

• 29 August — Department of Atomic Energy. About ₹20,000 crore committed to small modular reactors — a bet on units sited beside industrial load rather than only on the coastline.

• 24 August — Ministry of Coal. Talabira II and III opencast mines recorded their highest annual production, 19.14 million tonnes in FY 2025-26.

• 27 August — Juniper Green Energy. Q1 FY27 profit up 54.29% year on year, with a 50 MW firm and dispatchable renewable energy agreement signed with SJVN — round-the-clock clean power beginning to read well on a balance sheet.

• 24 August — MoEFCC, Ulaanbaatar. At UNCCD COP17 India pressed for adequate, predictable and sustained international finance for land restoration and drought resilience.

08 Agriculture, Rural Development & Cooperatives

• 27 August — Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. Calibrated onion buffer release began, the first ‘Kanda Express’ rake leaving Nashik. Buffer operations that move ahead of the price spike cost the exchequer less than those that chase it.

• 28 August — Department of Food & Public Distribution. A dealer stock limit was imposed on sugar, with releases moving to a fortnightly cycle from September — a supply-management signal ahead of the festive quarter.

• 24 August — ICAR, Eluru. India’s first non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed was launched, addressing an import line in the snack-food supply chain.

• 29 August — Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. Cattle dung was given a formal price under the bioenergy programme, creating a monetisable output from a previously unpriced farm residue.

09 Health & Pharmaceuticals

• 28 August — Department of Pharmaceuticals. A ₹5,000 crore second call opened under the pharmaceutical and medical-device innovation programme — capital aimed at the discovery end, where Indian pharma’s margins have historically not been.

• 24 August — Central Bureau of Narcotics and PHARMEXCIL, Gwalior. An MoU to streamline documentation for legitimate pharmaceutical exports, reducing a compliance friction that costs exporters shipping days.

• 29 August — Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. A dated national elimination target was set for a communicable disease, moving the programme from control to elimination.

10 Education, Skilling & Youth

• 25 August — NITI Aayog. ‘Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047’ was released. For employers the operative question is whether assessment and certification become employer-led; that is what determines whether a skilling certificate carries a wage premium.

• 26 August — UPESSC. UPTET 2026 results declared, 13.30 lakh candidates qualifying — a supply-side number for the country’s largest school system.

• 27 August — Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad. The Union Home Minister addressed the 72nd convocation; about nine hundred degrees conferred.

• 28 August — Ministry of Education. About four thousand research fellowships were announced, funding named scholars rather than block institutional grants.

11 Science, Space & Technology

• 25 August — CSIR-NAL. Three indigenous micro and small gas turbine engines unveiled — the NJ-05, NJ-50 and NJ-100. Import substitution at the component level is where drone-sector margins are actually decided.

• 29 August — MeitY. A sovereign AI stack for Indian enterprises was released — relevant to any firm currently carrying foreign-currency inference costs on its P&L.

• 25 August — C-DOT. The telecom research organisation marked its 43rd Foundation Day, with Made-in-India equipment pointed at export markets.

• 29 August — Department of Telecommunications. More than 75,000 lost handsets traced and returned through the CEIR system in the reporting period.

• 24 August — Tata Consultancy Services. TCS agreed to acquire MHP, Porsche AG’s Germany-based IT consulting subsidiary, alongside a five-year artificial-intelligence partnership — an Indian IT major buying a German marque’s engineering software arm rather than staffing it.

12 Defence & Internal Security

• 25 August — DRDO. Conventional missile technologies released to Indian industry. Technology transfer of this kind converts a defence R&D line item into a private order book, over a lag of several years.

• 27 August — HAL, Safran Helicopter Engines and SAFHAL. The Aravalli engine contract signed — entry into helicopter hot-section design, among the highest-value segments of the aerospace supply chain.

• 27 August — Ministry of Defence, Jabalpur. Foundation stone laid for the T-72 overhaul plant at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, onshoring a mid-life refit stream previously done abroad.

• 27 August — India and the United Kingdom. An inter-governmental agreement on Integrated Full Electric Propulsion for four Landing Platform Docks.

13 Law, Justice & Parliament

• 25 August — Ministry of Home Affairs. A rollout timetable was set for the three new criminal laws across States and Union Territories — a dated compliance calendar for corporate legal departments.

• 28 August — Ministry of Law & Justice. A council was constituted for mediation and alternative dispute resolution, aimed at commercial disputes. Faster contract enforcement is the single cheapest improvement available to India’s ease-of-doing-business score.

• 29 August — National Human Rights Commission, Gandhinagar. The Commission held a camp sitting, taking hearings to complainants.

• Parliament was not in session during the week under review.

14 Social Welfare, Women & Child, Tribal Affairs
• 26 August — Ministry of Labour & Employment. e-Shram completed five years with more than 31 crore registrations — the identity layer on which portable social security for gig and unorganised workers will have to be built.

• 26 August — Government of Delhi. Four thousand women received approval letters under the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, with transfers beginning from the first of the month.

• 28 August — Ministry of Rural Development. Self-help group women in the North East received a first tranche of ₹10,000 each, positioned as the entry point to a longer credit relationship rather than a terminal grant.

15 The States & the North East

• 25 August — Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shillong. Stunting among under-fives reported down from 46% to about 36% in three years — ten percentage points, or a 21.7% fall on the earlier level (our computation) — with maternal mortality down 55%.

• 25 August — Government of Uttar Pradesh. 481 appointment letters distributed at Lucknow, with a six-month target of one lakh more.

• 24 August — Government of Haryana. The Godrej ₹20,000 crore memorandum places Haryana among the week’s largest State-level investment announcements.

• 25 August — Government of Delhi. The Food Safety Department intensified festive-season enforcement, ahead of the quarter in which packaged-food volumes peak.

16 Culture, Heritage & Tourism

• 26 August — IICT and Netflix. Scholarships announced for one hundred students across six creative programmes — private capital funding the skills pipeline of India’s creative economy.

• 25 August — BRICS Academic Forum, Lucknow. The 18th Academic Forum closed under India’s BRICS chairship, setting intellectual groundwork for the September summit.

• 29 August — Bengaluru. A public centenary was observed in the city.

17 Sport

• 27 August — National Sports Day. The Prime Minister addressed the Khelo India Dialogue, proposing two sports colleges in every district — the demand-side case for India’s sports goods and services industry is built on exactly this kind of district-level participation.

• 26 August — Grand Chess Tour. R Praggnanandhaa reached the final of the tour’s concluding leg.

• 29 August — Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. The ‘one hour on the playing field’ call was carried nationally.

18 India & the World

• 27 August — Ministry of External Affairs. India will host the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 12 and 13 September — the commercial agenda to watch is payments, grain and critical minerals.

• 25 August — National Security Council Secretariat, Beijing. The National Security Adviser co-chaired the 25th round of the Special Representatives’ Talks.

• 29 August — Ministry of Defence, New Delhi. India and Kuwait held the first meeting of their Joint Defence Cooperation Committee.

• 27 August — MEA, Ha Noi. The Minister of State for External Affairs called on Vietnam’s Prime Minister; the India–Vietnam basket now runs from coast guard cooperation to electronics.

• 29 August — India and Argentina. Market access for Indian pharmaceutical products moved a step closer under the bilateral trade track.
