NEW DELHI: ISRO’s mission page of 29 August 2026 records that GSLV-F17, the nineteenth flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, will place EOS-05 into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit from the Second Launch Pad at SHAR, and describes EOS-05 as India’s first ever imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit.
The commercial reading
Earth observation from a low polar orbit produces sharp images on a fixed revisit cycle, and India’s existing constellation does that well. What it cannot sell is continuous observation of one region. A geosynchronous imaging platform can, and the industries that pay for continuous observation are different from those that pay for sharp images: insurance and reinsurance pricing weather risk, power and grid operators watching cloud cover over solar capacity, port and shipping operations, agricultural advisory services timing an intervention within a season rather than after it, and disaster response, where the value of an image decays in hours.
For India this also has an import-substitution dimension. Continuous regional imagery over the subcontinent is at present bought where it can be found; a domestic geosynchronous platform changes who owns that data and under what terms it is licensed.
The limits, stated plainly
Distance costs resolution. A satellite at geosynchronous altitude is far enough away that, for comparable optics, ground detail is coarser than from low orbit. It is a complement to the existing constellation, not a replacement, and any business case built on it should be built on revisit frequency rather than on image sharpness. No resolution figure appears on ISRO’s mission page and none is offered here.
Offered only as corrective advice, to help the work move faster: where a new class of national space asset is being flown, an early published statement of the intended data policy — who may buy the imagery, at what latency, and on what licence — would let Indian firms design services around it before launch rather than a year after it.
