Nuclear Energy to Drive India’s Future: Union Minister

Speaking at a press conference at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Singh hailed the Union Budget as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forward-thinking vision. A Rs 20,000 crore investment has been earmarked for research and development in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with a target of operationalizing five indigenously designed SMRs by 2033.

“This initiative is a crucial step toward achieving our ambitious goal of 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy sustainability,” Dr. Singh stated.

Private Sector Participation: A Game-Changer

A major highlight of the budget is the landmark decision to open the nuclear sector to private players, a move Dr. Singh described as a “game-changer” for India’s energy landscape. Drawing parallels with the success of private sector involvement in the space industry, he expressed confidence that similar reforms in the nuclear sector would drive innovation and accelerate growth.

“For decades, India’s nuclear industry operated under stringent regulations. However, these policy shifts will usher in a new era of openness, fostering greater collaboration and aligning with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India),” he added.

Nuclear Power: A Pillar of India’s Energy Strategy

Dr. Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making nuclear power a cornerstone of India’s energy strategy, emphasizing its potential to drive technological advancements and energy independence. “This is more than just an energy initiative; it’s a roadmap to a technologically advanced and self-reliant India,” he stated.

With these ambitious plans, India is set to emerge as a global leader in advanced nuclear technology by 2047, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy and sustainable development.
