NEW DELHI: In what could be considered the single biggest catalyst for India’s rise as a global artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse, global technology giant Google has announced a $15-billion investment to establish its largest AI hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with the Adani Group.
The five-year project — spanning data infrastructure, clean energy, and digital connectivity — is set to transform India’s innovation landscape and empower startups, enterprises, and developers across sectors from healthcare to agriculture.
The initiative, unveiled at Bharat AI Shakti, a Google-hosted event ahead of the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, signals a decisive shift in India’s digital trajectory — from being a consumer of global technology to becoming its creator and exporter.

The hub will feature a 1-gigawatt data centre campus, India’s largest, along with a subsea cable network and clean energy infrastructure, enabling Google to manage massive AI workloads and offer Indian enterprises access to high-performance computing previously concentrated in Silicon Valley. “It’s the largest AI hub we are investing in anywhere in the world outside the US,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.
The announcement drew a high-profile audience including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, reflecting the project’s national importance.
“Great to speak with PM Modi about our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X. “Through it we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”
The hub will anchor Google’s global AI infrastructure strategy, linking new compute capacity, an international subsea gateway, and large-scale renewable power generation. The project is expected to spur local innovation ecosystems by connecting Indian startups, research institutions, and digital enterprises with Google’s AI cloud and tools.
Google’s Indian partner, AdaniConneX — a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX — will co-develop the campus, marking a major leap in India’s data centre industry. “This facility will house TPU and GPU-based compute power required for deep learning, neural network training, and large-scale AI model inference,” said Gautam Adani, Adani Group Chairman. “We are honoured to be building the engine to power India’s AI revolution.”
The project will also co-invest in clean energy generation, transmission lines, and energy storage systems, enabling sustainable operations while feeding green power into the grid. Google said it will work with partners such as Airtel to expand fiber-optic networks and data transmission capacity.
An analysis commissioned by Google estimates that the AI hub will generate at least $15 billion in additional GDP over five years (2026–2030), driven by AI adoption, cloud innovation, and new AI-based industries. But the larger dividends will come from job creation, skill development, and knowledge diffusion, turning India into a centre of AI research and entrepreneurship.
Finance Minister Sitharaman described the project as a defining moment for India’s tech economy. “Since 2014, we have created policy frameworks that enable digital transformation. Now we are witnessing the results — India is the right place for AI to take root,” she said, praising Andhra’s proactive governance in building digital infrastructure.
IT Minister Vaishnaw said the AI hub will be a cornerstone of India’s national AI mission. “It will augment the infrastructure needed for our youth and startups to develop the next generation of AI products and services,” he said.
For Andhra Pradesh, the project reaffirms its position as a digital frontrunner. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who earlier pioneered Hyderabad’s Cyberabad, noted that Google’s investment commitment had risen from $10 billion to $15 billion. “Our goal must be to upskill our youth to meet the demands of this AI-driven economy,” he said.
What distinguishes this project is its integration of AI research, high-performance computing, and renewable energy, forming a self-sustaining ecosystem for innovation. The hub will allow Indian startups to access advanced AI capabilities without the prohibitive costs of building their own infrastructure — potentially transforming their global competitiveness.
For India’s vast startup ecosystem — the world’s third largest — Google’s AI hub could be a turning point. With local compute capacity, faster data speeds, and reduced latency, Indian developers can train and deploy AI models within the country, spurring breakthroughs in agriculture, logistics, healthcare, finance, and education. The resulting innovation could position India as a key exporter of AI solutions.
The investment aligns seamlessly with Prime Minister Modi’s Digital India and IndiaAI Mission, both designed to integrate AI into governance, business, and daily life while ensuring ethical and inclusive growth. By choosing Visakhapatnam — a port city with rising tech infrastructure — Google is signalling confidence in India’s emerging urban hubs as future digital power centres.
As the world races toward an AI-powered future, the collaboration between Google, Adani, and the Indian Government may well be remembered as the moment India shifted from being a digital participant to a digital leader — not just consuming technology, but shaping its frontiers.
