25.9 Lakh Retailed, and a Mix That Moved

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: July delivered 25,91,138 vehicle registrations, up 25.89 per cent, with a record for every one of the six categories. The volume is the headline. The mix inside it is the number that will show up in manufacturers’ margins.

Electric registrations across all categories reached an all-time high of 3,27,901, lifting EV penetration to about 12.7 per cent of total sales from 9.6 per cent in July 2025. Electric two-wheelers crossed two lakh in a single month for the first time at 2,04,362, up 88.32 per cent from 1,08,516 a year earlier, taking their share of the two-wheeler market to 11.24 per cent — from 10.59 per cent in June and 7.65 per cent in July 2025. That is a share gain of nearly three and a half percentage points in twelve months, in the highest-volume, thinnest-margin segment of the Indian market.

Registrations, not dispatches: retail data counts vehicles that found a buyer, which is why it reads differently from factory wholesale numbers.

Two legacy manufacturers sold half of India’s electric scooters last month. The disruption arrived; the disruptors did not necessarily collect it.

At a Glance

• Total retail, July 2026: 25,91,138 units, up 25.89 per cent — a record July in all six categories
• All EV registrations: 3,27,901, an all-time high
• EV penetration: about 12.7 per cent, from 9.6 per cent in July 2025
• Electric two-wheelers: 2,04,362, up 88.32 per cent
• Electric share of two-wheelers: 11.24 per cent, from 10.59 in June and 7.65 a year earlier
• Segment leaders: TVS 55,499 · Bajaj 45,613 · Ather 30,357 · Hero 22,900 · Ola Electric 14,106

The competitive table is the part worth pricing. TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto together retailed 1,01,112 electric two-wheelers in July — just under half the segment. Ather Energy, the strongest electric-first manufacturer, took 30,357; Hero MotoCorp 22,900; Ola Electric 14,106. For an equity analyst that ordering carries a specific implication: the incumbents are defending share in electric without having conceded their petrol volumes, which means the transition is currently additive to their unit economics rather than cannibalising them. For the pure-play manufacturers it means the assumption that legacy distribution would be a liability has not held. Service network density, dealer financing relationships and brand tenure in small towns turned out to be the moat, not the battery pack.

Two cautions belong on a record month. Retail registrations at 25.89 per cent growth are running well ahead of what underlying income growth alone would support, which usually indicates a favourable base, festive-season pre-buying, or discounting — and the passenger vehicle channel has carried elevated inventory in recent months, which is a margin question waiting for a quarter. The second is that EV share of two-wheelers is being pulled by a relatively narrow set of urban and semi-urban markets. The constructive path from 11 per cent to 25 is well identified: charging access for households without private parking, financing for buyers without formal income documentation, and a functioning second-hand market that gives an electric scooter a credible residual value. Whoever solves the third one first will find it worth more than another point of market share.
