Electric Cars Grew Fastest, From the Smallest Base

NEW DELHI: India’s electric transition has been carried by three-wheelers and scooters. July’s registration data show the passenger car finally moving — and moving fastest.

Electric vehicle retail registrations reached a record 3,27,901 units in July 2026, up over 66 per cent year on year, on the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations’ registration data. Against total retail sales of 25,91,138 units, this desk computes electric penetration at 12.65 per cent, against 9.6 per cent a year earlier. Within that, electric passenger vehicles grew 83 per cent to hold a 7.9 per cent share of their segment — the fastest growth rate of any category in the month.

The segment structure is what makes this interesting. Electric three-wheelers hold a 65.1 per cent share of their segment, which is to say the electric three-wheeler is no longer an alternative but the default. Electric two-wheelers crossed 2 lakh units in a month for the first time, at an 11.2 per cent share. Commercial vehicles nearly trebled to a record 3.57 per cent. Passenger vehicles, at 7.9 per cent, sit between the two-wheeler and the commercial vehicle — but with the steepest growth rate of the four.

Four segments, four speeds. Three-wheelers are 65.1 per cent electric; two-wheelers 11.2 per cent; passenger vehicles 7.9 per cent; commercial vehicles 3.57 per cent. The passenger car has the smallest base and the fastest growth.

A three-wheeler converts on running cost alone. A car converts on running cost, charging access and resale confidence — which is why it moved last.

At a Glance

• Total EV retails, July 2026: 3,27,901 units — the highest month on record
• Growth: over 66% year on year
• Penetration: 12.65% of 25,91,138 total retails (this desk’s computation), from 9.6%
• Passenger vehicles: up 83%, 7.9% segment share
• Two-wheelers: past 2 lakh units in a month for the first time, 11.2% share
• Three-wheelers: 65.1% share — electric is the default
• Commercial vehicles: record 3.57% share, nearly trebled
• Total retails, July: up 25.89% year on year

The order in which these segments converted is not accidental and it tells a lender and a manufacturer where the next conversion will come from. The three-wheeler went first because its economics are pure running cost: a driver covering 100 kilometres a day recovers a price premium within months, and the vehicle returns to a known base every night, which solves charging without any public infrastructure at all. The two-wheeler followed for similar reasons at a smaller ticket. The passenger car was always going to be last, because a household buying a car is underwriting three separate risks — running cost, charging access on an unplanned journey, and residual value at resale — and only the first of those is settled by arithmetic.

An 83 per cent growth rate at a 7.9 per cent share therefore reads as the third risk beginning to clear. Residual-value confidence in a vehicle category is built by two things: a visible secondary market, and enough units on the road that a buyer knows the technology is not orphaned. At current volumes the Indian electric passenger car is approaching both.

Two cautions for anyone modelling from these numbers. First, these are retail registrations, not wholesale dispatches; the two series diverge when inventory builds or unwinds, and July’s overall retail growth of 25.89 per cent was itself unusually strong. Second, a 7.9 per cent share is a share of a segment whose absolute size dwarfs the three-wheeler market, so each percentage point of passenger-vehicle penetration represents far more units, more charging load and more battery demand than the same point elsewhere. The constructive priority that follows is highway charging density and a published, standardised battery state-of-health disclosure at resale — the two measures that would settle the remaining risk and let the fastest-growing segment keep growing.
