CLEAN gigawatts

As of January 2025, India’s total installed electricity generation capacity stands at approximately 452.69 gigawatts (gw), with renewable energy sources accounting for 201.45 gw — an impressive 46.3 per cent of the total capacity.

India has emerged as a global powerhouse in the renewable energy sector, reflecting its commitment to sustainable development and climate change mitigation. With a robust policy framework, significant investments, and contributions from leading domestic companies, the country is poised to achieve ambitious clean energy goals and establish itself as a key player in the international market.

As of January 2025, India’s total installed electricity generation capacity stands at approximately 452.69 gigawatts (gw), with renewable energy sources accounting for 201.45 gw — an impressive 46.3 per cent of the total capacity. This includes contributions from solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectric power, making India one of the top global players in renewable energy deployment.

India’s renewable energy capacity has grown exponentially over the past decade, driven by a favorable policy environment, technological advancements, and substantial private-sector investments. The country has committed to achieving 500 gw of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030 under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.

Economic opportunity

The renewable energy sector is not only an environmental imperative but also an economic opportunity for India. The sector has attracted significant investments, with projections indicating that capital inflows into renewable energy could surpass USD 32 billion in 2025. This growth is expected to generate employment opportunities, strengthen infrastructure, and contribute to the nation’s GDP.

While exact figures on the sector’s GDP contribution are evolving, the impact on allied industries such as manufacturing, technology, and services is substantial. For instance, the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) are fostering domestic manufacturing of solar photovoltaic modules, reducing dependency on imports, and creating jobs in the renewable energy value chain.

Government initiatives

India’s progress in renewable energy has been underpinned by strong policy support from the government, NITI Aayog, and professional bodies. Key initiatives include:

1. National Green Hydrogen Mission: This flagship program aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production. Green hydrogen, derived from renewable energy sources, is seen as a game-changer for reducing carbon emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, and heavy transport.

2. Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs): These mandates require electricity distribution companies to source a specified percentage of their energy from renewable sources. RPOs have been instrumental in creating a steady demand for renewable energy and integrating it into the national grid.

3. Green Energy Corridors: To ensure seamless evacuation and integration of renewable energy into the grid, the government has invested heavily in transmission infrastructure. The development of renewable energy parks and large-scale solar and wind farms is further bolstering the sector’s capacity.

4. International Collaborations: India is leveraging international partnerships to boost its renewable energy goals. For instance, agreements with countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and Egypt highlight India’s growing influence and commitment to global energy cooperation.
