India’s electric vehicle (EV) retail sales touched an all-time high of 3,06,220 units in June, rising nearly 63 per cent year-on-year, with every major vehicle segment posting healthy growth and electric passenger vehicles (PVs) and commercial vehicles (CVs) recording their highest-ever monthly sales, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The milestone came despite a delayed monsoon and the seasonally weak demand period. EVs accounted for more than 12 per cent of all vehicle retail sales during the month, marking the first time overall EV penetration crossed the 12 per cent mark.

FADA President C S Vigneshwar said June represented a defining month for India’s EV transition, with record retail sales across vehicle categories.

“The industry retailed 3,06,220 electric vehicles, an all-time high in FADA’s records and nearly 63 per cent higher than a year ago, even as the broader market navigated a delayed monsoon and a seasonally lean patch,” he said.

Electric two-wheelers drive growth

Electric two-wheelers remained the biggest growth driver, with retail sales rising 75 per cent year-on-year to 1,93,735 units in June. Sales were also up 13.5 per cent over May, taking EV penetration in the segment to 10.6 per cent from 9.3 per cent in May and 7 per cent a year earlier.

Four wheelers hit record highs

Electric passenger vehicle retail sales more than doubled from a year earlier to a record 31,823 units in June and increased 19.3 per cent over May. EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment rose to 7.7 per cent from 6.6 per cent in May and 4.8 per cent a year ago.

Tata Motors continued to lead the segment with 12,187 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra with 7,766 units and JSW MG Motor India with 5,861 units. Maruti Suzuki retailed 1,919 electric cars, while VinFast registered 1,404 units.

Electric commercial vehicles also posted their strongest-ever monthly performance, with retail sales surging 163.7 per cent year-on-year and 33.9 per cent sequentially to 3,214 units. EV penetration in the segment increased to 3.53 per cent from 2.86 per cent in May and 1.57 per cent in June last year.

Tata Motors led the commercial EV segment with 1,114 units, followed by Euler Motors with 700 units and Mahindra Group with 315 units. FADA noted that Telangana registration data was unavailable for the commercial vehicle category.

Three-wheelers most electrified segment

Electric three-wheelers continued to be India’s most electrified vehicle category, with retail sales increasing 27.4 per cent year-on-year to 77,448 units in June. EV penetration stood at 64.1 per cent, compared with at 64.1 per cent in May and 58.4 per cent a year earlier.

Mahindra Group led the segment with 12,838 units, narrowly ahead of Bajaj Auto’s 11,279 units. TVS Motor, YC Electric Vehicle and Dilli Electric Auto were among the other leading manufacturers.
