₹1.95 Lakh Crore: June GST Rises 13.9%, With Imports Doing the Heavy Lifting

Blitz India Business

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax collection rose 13.9% year-on-year to about ₹1.95 lakh crore in June, one of the stronger prints of the year and a sign that the formal economy kept its momentum through the first quarter of FY27. Net of refunds, collections were up 11.2% at ₹1.62 lakh crore.

The composition is telling. GST on imports jumped 34.6% to ₹60,038 crore, outpacing a steadier 6.5% rise in domestic collections to about ₹1.35 lakh crore — a mix that points to firm import demand alongside resilient home consumption. For the April–June quarter, gross GST reached roughly ₹6.32 lakh crore, up 8.4% on the year.

A double-digit GST month is more than a revenue line — it is a real-time read on demand, imports and the widening formal base beneath India’s growth.

By the Numbers
  • Gross (June): ~₹1.95 lakh cr, +13.9% YoY
  • Net (June): ₹1.62 lakh cr, +11.2%
  • Imports vs domestic: +34.6% (₹60,038 cr) vs +6.5% (~₹1.35 lakh cr)
  • Q1 FY27: ~₹6.32 lakh cr gross, +8.4%

Buoyant indirect-tax receipts give the exchequer room — supporting capital spending and welfare outlays without stretching the deficit — and reflect both better compliance and the steady formalisation of activity. The faster growth in import GST bears watching as a signal of domestic demand and, indirectly, of the trade balance.

The constructive task is to keep the base widening: simpler compliance for small businesses, quicker refunds to ease working capital, and stable rates that give firms predictability. Sustained, a strong revenue stream funds the public investment on which India’s growth increasingly leans.
