India Economy: Markets, UPI, Trade, Energy & Growth

Equities: Both Streaks Broken, Twenty Minutes Apart
The Sensex closed 628.04 points up at 77,537.72 and the Nifty 153.53 up at 24,231.85. At 3:22 p.m., inside the closing auction session, the Sensex stood at 77,485.29 — meaning the final print added a further 52.43 points to the day’s headline gain.

Breadth : Midcaps and Smallcaps Both Higher
The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.41 per cent and the Smallcap 100 0.68 per cent, both outpacing or matching the benchmark. Every NSE sectoral index closed higher except Chemicals and PSU Bank. Nifty Media led at 2.1 per cent, followed by Realty at 1.4 per cent.

Commodities : Gold Past $4,550, Silver Past $67
A weaker dollar, following US Treasury action to contain global bond yields, lifted gold above $4,550 an ounce and silver above $67. The gold-to-silver ratio works out to about 67.9. Indian jewellers stock inventory through August ahead of the festival and wedding season.

Payments : UPI Value Hits ₹29.88 Lakh Crore
July set records on both counts: 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore. Volume grew 21.5 per cent year on year against 19.0 per cent for value — which means the average payment fell to ₹1,263 from ₹1,289. Daily run rate: 763 million transactions.

Bilateral
$101.25 Billion, and a 12 Per Cent Ask
India–UAE trade reached $101.25 billion in FY 2025-26, above $100 billion for a second year, with non-oil close to two-thirds of the total. Reaching the stated $200 billion target by 2032 requires 12.0 per cent compound growth every year from the current base.

Energy : Brent Toward $92 on a Fourth Straight Gain
Brent rose toward $92 a barrel on 19 August, a fourth consecutive session of gains, with no US-Iran agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts cited crude as the principal offset to Thursday’s equity rebound, weighing on the inflation and corporate margin outlook.

Autos : Tata Motors Nears a Record on Volume
Tata Motors gained about 2 per cent to ₹487.40 on the BSE, a level last seen more than five months ago and 22 per cent above its June low. The move came in a session where rate-sensitive sectors led, consistent with an easing-yield rather than an earnings-led rally.

Agriculture : Rice Is 68.6 Per Cent of the Sowing Gap
Kharif area to 14 August was 1,016.57 lakh hectares against 1,037.52 a year earlier. Rice accounts for 14.37 lakh hectares of the 20.95 lakh hectare decline. Pulses are flat at 108.14 lakh hectares and cotton down 0.89 per cent — a benign mix for food inflation.

Semiconductors : ₹65,000 Crore of ₹76,000 Crore Committed
Close to 85.5 per cent of the Semicon India corpus has been committed against approved projects worth about ₹1.60 lakh crore — roughly ₹2.5 of project capital per rupee of incentive. ISM 2.0, provided ₹1,000 crore for FY 2026-27, targets equipment, materials and skills.

Trade : CETA Completes Its First Month
The India–UK agreement has been in force since 15 July. Ninety-nine per cent of Indian tariff lines now enter Britain duty-free or at reduced duty against 90 per cent the other way, on a base of £48 billion of two-way trade in 2025. The first full quarter of data lands in October.
