NEW DELHI: Electric vehicle retail sales reached a monthly record 3,27,901 units in July, up 66 per cent year on year, pushing overall EV penetration past 12 per cent for the first time. The previous record, set in June, was 3,06,220 units.
The engine of it was two-wheelers, which crossed the two-lakh mark for the first time at 2,04,362 units. That single line explains the shape of India’s transition: it is not being led by the passenger car, as in most Western markets, but by the commuter vehicle that the majority of Indian households actually buy.

Penetration went from 0.71 per cent in 2019-20 to 8.26 per cent in 2025-26. July was the month it crossed twelve.

• Two-wheelers 2,04,362 units — first time above 2 lakh
• Trajectory 0.71% in FY20 to 8.26% in FY26
For component suppliers the composition is the commercially useful detail. A two-wheeler-led transition builds demand for smaller battery packs, motors and controllers at very high volume — a different manufacturing proposition from a car-led transition, and one better matched to India’s existing auto-component base.
The constraint is no longer principally demand. It is charging density, battery cell localisation and the financing of the vehicle at the point of sale. Penetration at 12 per cent means the early-adopter segment is exhausted and the next cohort is more price- and range-sensitive. The next few months of monthly retails will show whether the curve holds.
