Cristiano Ronaldo’s glittering FIFA World Cup journey came to an emotional end as Portugal crashed out following a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. The 41-year-old captain, who had announced that the 2026 tournament would be his last World Cup, walked off the pitch in tears after Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time strike shattered Portugal’s hopes.

Despite the disappointing exit, Ronaldo once again proved his enduring class. He finished as Portugal’s leading attacking figure, scoring three goals during the tournament to guide his side into the knockout stage. He also became the only player to score goals in six different edtions of the World Cup.

His experience, movement and leadership remained invaluable, even as younger teammates shared the spotlight.

However for Ronaldo, individual milestones counted for little. The World Cup trophy remained the one major honour that eluded one of football’s greatest players. Having represented Portugal in six World Cups over two decades, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as the country’s all-time leading scorer and one of the sport’s most decorated icons.

As the final whistle confirmed Portugal’s elimination, Ronaldo’s tears reflected not just the pain of defeat, but the end of a remarkable World Cup chapter that inspired millions across the globe.
