Flat Profit, Firmer Revenue: Wipro Frames the IT Read

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: Take the two lines that matter. In its June-quarter (Q1 FY27) results this month, Wipro reported net profit of about ₹3,356 crore — essentially flat, up around 0.6% year-on-year — on revenue of roughly ₹24,479 crore, up a healthier 10.6% from a year earlier and about 1% sequentially. IT-services operating margin came in near 16% on higher project ramp-up costs, and the board declared an interim dividend of ₹2 a share. Profit and revenue landed just shy of Street estimates.

The read on the sector is one of steady demand meeting a margin squeeze. Double-digit revenue growth says client budgets are firming and large-deal momentum is intact, even as the profit line reflects the cost of onboarding new work and investing in artificial-intelligence capability. It is a familiar picture across Indian IT this results season: the top line is resilient, but the earnings leverage now depends on converting AI-led modernisation into higher-value, better-margined delivery.

Growth up, margin pinched: Wipro’s Q1 FY27 showed revenue up ~10.6% to ~₹24,479 cr with net profit near-flat at ~₹3,356 cr and IT-services margin around 16% — a snapshot of an industry with firm demand and an AI-era margin task.

In IT services this season, the top line answers the demand question and the margin line asks the AI one. Both matter; only one is fully in the companies’ hands.

By the Numbers

• Net profit: ~₹3,356 cr, up ~0.6% YoY (Q1 FY27)
• Revenue: ~₹24,479 cr, up ~10.6% YoY, ~1% QoQ
• Margin: IT-services operating margin ~16%
• Payout: interim dividend of ₹2 per share; results just below estimates

For investors, the signals to track are the durable ones: large-deal total contract value, which measures the future order book; margin trajectory as ramp-up costs normalise; and management commentary on discretionary spending in the big Western markets that drive Indian IT. A near-flat profit alongside double-digit revenue is not a warning so much as a marker of a sector mid-transition — growing its book while retooling how that book is delivered.

The constructive read is that Indian IT retains formidable strengths — deep talent, trusted delivery and long client relationships — even as AI rewrites the economics in real time. The way forward is to convert AI from a threat to headcount-linked revenue into a new line of business helping clients deploy it, defend margins through productivity rather than pricing alone, and keep reskilling a workforce that remains a national asset. This quarter is a checkpoint on that shift, and a steady one.
