The 5-Point inflation story

New Delhi, 14 September Two arms of the Government of India published price data on the same day and arrived at figures that look like they come from DIFFERENT countries. Wholesale inflation for August 2026 was 9.92%. Retail inflation for the same month was 4.82%. The gap is 5.10 percentage points, and it is the most useful number nobody printed.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s press release of 14 September 2026 carried the provisional wholesale price index for August; the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s press release of the same day carried the consumer price index for that month, with its item weights set out in the annexure. Both are official, both are correct, and they are measuring different things at different points in a chain.

Where the wedge opens

Follow the fuel. In the wholesale index, fuel and power ran at 22.93% in August, up from 20.05% in July. In the consumer index, the group for electricity, gas and other fuels came in at 3.09%, and the wider housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels division at 2.61%.

Nearly 23% at the wholesale gate; about 3% at the household meter. That is not a contradiction in the data. It is a description of how much of India’s energy price is administered, contracted or cushioned before it reaches a domestic connection.

The wholesale index has no services in it at all. The consumer index is roughly half services by the time education, health, rent, transport fares and restaurants are counted. So a shock that begins in a commodity shows up in the wholesale number immediately, in the retail number slowly, and in some heads not at all.

What the wholesale numbers say

The all-commodities wholesale index stood at 110.8 in August against 110.0 in July, on base 2022-23. Primary articles ran at 7.76%, down from 8.52%. Manufactured products were 8.37% against 8.29%. The ministry names mineral oils including petroleum products, food articles, manufacture of food products, manufacture of basic metals, non-food articles, and chemicals and chemical products as the groups behind the annual rate.

Primary articles cooled. Fuel and power did the opposite, and it did nearly three percentage points of extra work in a single month.

What the retail numbers say

On the consumer side, the all-India index reached 108.74 on base 2024=100, from 107.95 in July. Rural inflation was 5.23%, urban 4.31%. Food inflation was 5.95%.

Two heads inside the consumer index tell the same story as the wholesale one, for anyone who looks. Freight transport services ran at 14.64%. Operation of personal transport equipment — what it costs to run a vehicle you already own — ran at 7.40%. Purchase of vehicles fell 4.38%.
Buying the vehicle got cheaper. Running it got dearer. Moving goods in it got dearer still. That is the wholesale fuel number arriving at the household by the long road.

What a business should watch

A margin is squeezed at the point where an input price has moved and an output price has not. With wholesale at 9.92% and retail at 4.82%, that squeeze is currently sitting with the producer, the transporter and the processor rather than with the consumer.

It does not stay there indefinitely. The two series have converged before and will again, and the direction of travel decides who absorbs the difference. The September consumer price index is due on 12 October 2026.

For India, the useful point is that the country can see this coming at all. Two independent series, published on the same day to a published calendar, with the collection method and response rate disclosed, let a manufacturer plan a quarter instead of guessing one.

Blitz Data Card

New Delhi :At a glance
Wholesale inflation, August 2026: 9.92% (July: 9.78%)
Retail inflation, August 2026: 4.82% (July: 4.45%)
WPI all-commodities index: 110.8 (base 2022-23)
CPI all-India index: 108.74 (base 2024=100)
WPI fuel and power: 22.93% · CPI electricity, gas and other fuels: 3.09%

What India gains

Two series on two bases, published the same day to a fixed calendar, let a producer see a cost shock before it reaches the shelf — and let a household know the shock has not reached it yet.

Gold fever lifts inflation

New Delhi, 14 September Silver ornaments rose 107.11% in the year to August 2026 and gold, diamond and platinum ornaments 35.53%, according to the consumer price index release of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation dated 14 September 2026.

The two carry index weights of 0.3127 and 0.6230 in a basket of 100. Blitz multiplied each weight by its rate and found that together they contributed about 0.56 percentage points to the 4.82% headline — 11.5% of it, from under 1% of the basket. The release makes no such calculation; it is an approximation on the published weights.
Meanwhile tomatoes fell 31.09% and potatoes 13.14%. The kitchen got cheaper while the safe got dearer.

India opens a new trade corridor

New Delhi, 14 September Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin, holding Mercosur’s pro tempore presidency, announced the launch of negotiations to expand the India–Mercosur preferential trade agreement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on 14 September 2026.

The terms of reference defining the scope and structure of the expanded agreement are being finalised. Separately, the two sides signed the first additional protocol to the existing agreement, covering the electronic issue of certificates of origin.

For an exporter, the protocol is the near-term gain: a certificate of origin that moves as data rather than as stamped paper is days off a shipment’s clearing time.

India’s chip drive enters production mode

New Delhi, 14 September Twelve semiconductor projects have been approved under the Semiconductor India programme and three of them are in commercial production, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in its Semicon India 2026 release of 14 September 2026. The Union Cabinet has approved the next phase, Semiconductor 2.0, built on six pillars.

Electronic design automation tools have been provided to more than 400 academic institutions and 105 start-ups, and 24 start-ups have been approved under the design linked incentive scheme.

The ministry puts India’s present semiconductor demand at about 50 billion US dollars, projected to reach roughly 103 billion by 2030. The global market it values at about 796 billion dollars in 2025, projected above two trillion by 2030.

The fifth Semicon India runs from 17 to 19 September 2026 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Over 600 exhibitors including 300 international companies will occupy 15,000 square metres, with delegations from more than 40 countries.

RBI’s smart shield against cyber fraud

New Delhi, 14 September The Reserve Bank of India has proposed a framework under which banks would temporarily freeze only the disputed transaction amount instead of the entire account, where an unusual transfer of Rs 1,000 or more is flagged as potentially linked to a mule account or cyber fraud, All India Radio reported on 14 September 2026.

For a small business running its payments through a current account, a blanket freeze over one disputed entry has meant wages missed and suppliers unpaid while an inquiry ran its course. Ring-fencing the disputed sum keeps the inquiry and removes most of the collateral damage.

India gives Nepal a 600 MW green signal

New Delhi, 14 September The Ministry of Power has approved power export to the Nepal Electricity Authority for eighteen hours a day, from midnight to 6 pm, between 13 September 2026 and 31 December 2026, the ministry said on 14 September 2026. The approval covers up to 600 megawatt through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar line, All India Radio reported the same day.

Cross-border power between the two countries reverses with the seasons. What the approval buys is certainty for a quarter — the thing a distribution utility needs most and gets least.

MISHTI’s green frontier in Kutch

Naliya, Kutch, 14 September Mangrove planting in Kutch has been completed over 27,652 hectares against a cumulative target of 29,250 hectares for 2023-24 to 2026-27 under the MISHTI programme, of which 12,450 hectares are in the Kori Creek area, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said on 14 September 2026.

Blitz worked the ratios: 27,652 of 29,250 is 94.54% of a four-year target reached with a year still to run, and Kori Creek accounts for 45.02% of all planting. The release states neither.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, on a visit to Naliya the same day, inaugurated a soft release centre for the Great Indian Bustard and was briefed on about 11 square kilometres of grassland restored from Prosopis juliflora and a 30-kilometre predator-proof fence enclosing 15 square kilometres. About 3.49 lakh mangrove seedlings have been raised at the Jakhau nursery. At Sanyara, a 9.46 square kilometre Van Kavach carries over 10,000 saplings of 47 native species and is expected to lower local temperature by 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius.
