NEW DELHI: For a business reader the interesting thing about a technology-transfer event is not the technology. It is the address of the buyer. At a single function at the headquarters of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, seven technologies were licensed to seven named companies, and four of them are outside the National Capital Region — two in one district of western Uttar Pradesh.
The seven: Rydberg-systems-based broad-band electric-field sensing, from the National Physical Laboratory to Nostradamus Technologies Private Limited, Hyderabad; a high-volume PM2.5 impactor sampler, from the same laboratory to Engineering and Environmental Solutions Private Limited, Aligarh; a scalable process for recycling pharmaceutical blisters and allied packaging waste, to GM Industries, New Delhi; a drone-based non-destructive testing system for bridges, from the Central Road Research Institute to Dronix Technologies Private Limited, Chennai; an air-cleaning nano-photocatalytic pave-sealing emulsion to Ashita Renewables, Muzaffarnagar; a pothole repair machine to Petrochem Specialities, Muzaffarnagar; and a glare-mitigation device to Intelligent Diagnosis LLP, Gurugram.
Three of those seven are road-maintenance products with an obvious municipal buyer, one is an air-quality instrument at a moment when air-quality monitoring is a procurement line in every large Indian city, and one is a defence-adjacent sensing technology. The Director General of the Council and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr N. Kalaiselvi, described the monthly transfer function as a standing platform and made the point that a transfer is a culmination rather than a transaction.
Alongside the licences, ten Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravyas were released — eight phytochemicals, one precious metal, one propane gas, and this desk added the list to check it against the count. A certified reference material is import substitution of an unusually pure kind: a laboratory that today buys a standard from Europe to prove its own instrument will tomorrow buy it in rupees. Prof. Venu Gopal Achanta, Director of the National Physical Laboratory, made exactly that case at the function. Five vapour cells built at the laboratory also went to the Solid-State Physics Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation for quantum sensing.
