Twenty-Nine Gigawatts in Six Months

NEW DELHI:India installed a record 29 GW of solar and wind capacity in the first half of 2026, with solar additions up 43 per cent. The composition is what has changed: a substantial part of the surge came from rooftops rather than from utility-scale parks.

That distinction has consequences for anyone modelling the sector. Utility-scale capacity arrives in large, lumpy, tendered blocks with long lead times, financed on project terms and contracted through power purchase agreements. Rooftop arrives in lakhs of small units, financed at household or small-business level, and its revenue model is avoided tariff plus surplus export rather than a PPA. A market shifting weight towards rooftop is a market in which module demand becomes steadier and less tender-dependent, installation labour becomes the binding constraint instead of land and transmission, and the customer is a household rather than a discom.

288.58 GW and counting: solar accounts for 162.15 GW of installed renewable capacity, wind 57.44 GW, large hydro 57.24 GW and bio-power 11.75 GW, as of end-June 2026.

Utility-scale capacity is bought by committee. Rooftop capacity is bought by households — which makes the demand curve smoother and the logistics harder.

At a Glance

• H1 2026 additions: a record 29 GW of solar and wind; solar additions up 43 per cent
• Installed renewable capacity, end-June 2026: 288.58 GW
• Composition: solar 162.15 GW, wind 57.44 GW, large hydro 57.24 GW, bio-power 11.75 GW
• Non-fossil total: 297.36 GW, including 8.78 GW nuclear
• Target: 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030, per the COP26 commitment
• New on July 31: Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana — ₹5,070 crore for floating solar with storage

From 288.58 GW of renewables and 297.36 GW of non-fossil capacity, the 500 GW target for 2030 requires roughly 200 GW over four and a half years — about 45 GW a year against a first half that annualises near 58. On additions alone the trajectory is comfortable. The constraint that will decide the outcome is not megawatts but the system around them: evacuation capacity, storage, and the balance-sheet health of the distribution companies that must contract for the output. Capacity that cannot be evacuated or that is curtailed at midday earns nothing, and a developer who cannot be paid reliably prices that risk into the next bid.

This is where the ₹5,070 crore Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana, approved on July 31, is more interesting than its size suggests. Floating solar with energy storage attacks three constraints at once. It uses reservoir surface, so it does not compete for agricultural land or require fresh acquisition; the water beneath cools the modules, which lifts yield; and it is frequently sited at existing hydro reservoirs, which already have evacuation infrastructure and a grid connection in place. Pairing it with storage addresses the midday-surplus problem directly. At ₹5,070 crore it is a demonstration programme rather than a pillar of the 2030 target, and it should be read that way — but the constraint it is designed to test is precisely the one that will determine whether the last hundred gigawatts are as straightforward as the last twenty-nine.
