Sovereign Credit : JCR Lifts India One Notch, Ceiling To ‘A’
The Japan Credit Rating Agency has moved India’s long-term foreign-currency and local-currency issuer ratings from ‘BBB+’ to ‘A−’, outlook Stable, and the country ceiling from ‘A−’ to ‘A’. The ceiling matters to treasurers as much as the sovereign line does, because it caps what an Indian borrower can be rated on foreign currency. JCR credited growth carried by private consumption and public investment, digital public infrastructure, GST, and a spending mix tilted to capital. It recorded the Union fiscal deficit at 4.7 per cent in 2024-25 and 4.4 per cent in 2025-26 — a fall of 0.3 percentage points, which is 6.4 per cent of the earlier level, recomputed here. Finance Ministry and JCR statements, 2 September 2026.
Equities : Third Straight Session Lower For Both Indices
The Sensex closed 2 September 2026 at 76,570, down 374 points; the Nifty at 23,914, down 141. Recomputed at this desk, that is −0.49 per cent and −0.59 per cent respectively — a third consecutive declining session. The Nifty Midcap 100 also slipped. Currency : Rupee Closes At 94.98 To The Dollar
The rupee ended 2 September three paise weaker at 94.98 against the US dollar. It is worth holding this beside the swap-window story that leads this edition: the same fortnight in which the currency traded in a three-paise range saw more than sixty billion dollars arrive through a single Reserve Bank facility. Bullion : Gold And Silver Both Give Ground
In the Indian bullion market on 2 September, 24-carat gold fell 1.3 per cent to ₹1,51,184 per 10 grams and silver 0.9 per cent to ₹2,28,396 per kilogram. Reduced to a common weight at this desk, that is ₹15,118.40 a gram for gold against ₹228.40 a gram for silver — a price ratio of about 66 to 1 by weight, a figure no report carries and one that tells a jeweller more than either price alone. Akashvani bullion report, 2 September 2026, 6:46 PM IST.
Energy : Brent Below Ninety-Four Dollars In Intra-Day Trade
Global crude fell on 2 September, Brent trading one per cent down at $93.73 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate one per cent lower at $89.24, in intra-day trade when reports last came in. These are intra-day quotations and not settlements, which is why this desk carries them as such and draws no conclusion from them about the import bill. Gross GST collections in August 2026 were ₹1,99,853 crore against ₹1,74,116 crore in August 2025, on the Finance Ministry’s provisional data. The year-on-year increase, recomputed here, is 14.78 per cent, or ₹25,737 crore in absolute terms. Provisional, and therefore subject to revision.
