NEW DELHI: Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has entered the global top 20 in the latest Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (Wipo). The company said the achievement makes it the only Indian technology innovator to feature among the top 20 applicants in the global ranking based on published PCT data.

According to Reliance Jio, its patent portfolio is concentrated on next-generation digital technologies. The areas of innovation include 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.

Reliance Jio climbed 320 places in the 2025 rankings, making it one of the fastest-rising innovators globally. The company now stands alongside global technology leaders such as Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft in the latest Wipo rankings.

Focus on 5G, 6G and AI

According to Reliance Jio, its patent portfolio is concentrated on next-generation digital technologies. The areas of innovation include 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.

The company said the Wipo ranking reflects its growing focus on research and development across advanced technology domains and highlights the scale of innovation taking place within the organisation notably, Jio’s rise to the 20th position came during a year when global PCT filings grew by less than one percent, underscoring the pace of the company’s patent activity.

Commenting on the development, Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms Limited, said the ranking reflects years of effort towards transforming Jio into a deep-tech company.

“The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the Wipo PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company. It demonstrates the velocity of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies, which will continue to grow in coming years.”

Ambani dedicated the achievement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which aims to position India as a creator, owner and exporter of technology. He added that Jio is proud to contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a global deep-tech powerhouse.

Portfolio continues to expand

Jio Platforms reported that it had filed a cumulative 6,817 patents globally as of March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 patents were filed in India, while 4,424 patents were filed across international jurisdictions.

The company also disclosed that 1,009 patents have been granted worldwide so far. This includes 538 patent grants in India and 471 grants in international markets.

Jio said the ranking serves as an external recognition of its R&D productivity and the depth of its intellectual property portfolio, while also highlighting India-origin innovation in the global technology creation landscape.

Building future digital infrastructure

The company said its innovation efforts are grounded in technologies and platforms that have already been developed and commercialised at scale. At the same time, it is investing in future technologies expected to shape the next generation of digital infrastructure.

These include 5G and 6G radio technologies, 5G and 6G core networks, satellite communications and Agentic AI initiatives under JioBrain.

According to Jio, its growing intellectual property portfolio reflects a broader shift in India’s technology landscape from large-scale technology deployment towards original technology creation, with a focus on technologies that can support future commercial deployment across multiple sectors.
