The demand read is unambiguous: India’s total vehicle registrations rose about 21.8% year-on-year to a record 25.57 lakh units in June, with passenger vehicles up 28.6% to some 4.11 lakh units. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and passenger cars each notched their highest-ever June — an all-segment strength that reads as genuine, broad consumption rather than a single-category spike.
The mix carries a structural signal. Alternative-fuel passenger vehicles — CNG, hybrid and electric combined — crossed 40% of PV sales for the first time, confirming that cleaner drivetrains have moved into the mainstream of Indian buying decisions. That shift matters for the oil-import bill and for the manufacturers and financiers positioning around it.
A record across every segment is the cleanest read on household balance sheets there is. The caution is inventory, not appetite.
The one number to manage is inventory: stock at the retail end climbed to around 32–34 days, above the roughly three-week level the trade treats as healthy. That is a maturing-market signal to align dispatches with true demand ahead of the festive quarter, not a demand warning — the sell-through itself remains the story.
The constructive read is that mobility is becoming cleaner and more accessible together, underpinned by rising incomes and a deepening domestic manufacturing base. The way forward is to keep financing, charging and gas infrastructure expanding in step with the fleet, and to work down inventory so the festive run builds on firm ground.
