Big tech’s new AI triangle :Microsoft, Nvidia pour $15 bn into Anthropic

NEW DELHI:In one of the largest multi-investor bets in the global AI race, Microsoft Corp. and Nvidia Corp. have announced a combined investment commitment of up to $15 billion in Anthropic PBC, the fast-rising competitor to OpenAI.

The move signals a deepening realignment within the AI ecosystem, where leading cloud and semiconductor players are strategically backing next-generation model developers to secure long-term technological advantage.

As part of the agreement, Anthropic will purchase $30 billion worth of computing capacity from Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, creating a powerful supply-demand loop: big tech finances the AI model creators, who in turn commit massive consumption of cloud and chip infrastructure from the same companies.

Such “circular AI deals” have surged since 2023, with Amazon-Anthropic, Google-Anthropic, and Microsoft-OpenAI partnerships shaping global AI capacity. While these arrangements accelerate R&D and lower market-entry risks for developers, investors are increasingly questioning whether such high-value commitments indicate an emerging AI investment bubble.

Anthropic at the centre
Microsoft’s investment brings Anthropic closer into its orbit, even as the tech giant remains deeply tied to OpenAI after investing over $13 billion in the ChatGPT creator.

However, 2024-25 saw rising friction between Microsoft and OpenAI, including product overlaps and disagreements on commercialisation strategy. This fresh partnership with Anthropic diversifies Microsoft’s AI risk and ensures that Azure remains central to the training of the world’s most advanced models.

Satya Nadella underscored this collaborative future, stating:
“We are increasingly going to be customers of each other — we will use Anthropic models, they will use our infrastructure, and we will go to market together. This builds on our partnership with OpenAI, which remains a critical partner for Microsoft.”

Why this deal matters for India
• AI capacity race: With cloud usage now the biggest cost driver for model training, Azure’s $30-billion hosting deal positions Microsoft ahead of Google Cloud and AWS in high-value AI workloads.

• Chipmaker advantage: Nvidia strengthens its influence as every leading model creator — from Anthropic to OpenAI to Meta — relies heavily on its accelerated computing ecosystem.

• Market volatility: Microsoft’s shares dropped 2.6 per cent after the announcement, reflecting investor caution about spiralling AI infrastructure spending.

• Policy and competition: Regulators in the US and EU are examining whether such vertically integrated AI alliances risk locking smaller players out of the market.

“We are increasingly going to be customers of each other — we will use Anthropic models, they will use our infrastructure, and we will go to market together. This builds on our partnership with OpenAI, which remains a critical partner for Microsoft.” – Satya Nadella, Chairman, Microsoft
