The Business of Orbit: A Private Launch Opens a Commercial Frontier

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: Behind a national milestone sits a market. Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 — India’s first privately built orbital rocket — reached a 450 km orbit this month, making India only the third country, after the United States and China, with a private orbital launch capability. For the economy, the number that matters most is not the altitude but the valuation: Skyroot became the first Indian space-sector company to cross a $1 billion mark earlier this year, a signal that global and domestic capital now takes India’s private space industry seriously.

Read the market this opens. A working, home-built small-satellite launcher plugs India into a fast-growing global business of putting compact satellites into low-Earth orbit — the constellations behind earth observation, connectivity and data. Since the sector was opened to private players in 2020, a cluster of Indian start-ups has moved from prototypes to payloads, backed by the state agency ISRO as anchor customer and enabler rather than rival. A launch priced and scheduled by the market, not the calendar of a single agency, is what turns space from a national programme into an industry.

From programme to industry: Skyroot’s Vikram-1 debut — and its billion-dollar valuation — signals a maturing Indian private space sector plugging into the global small-satellite launch market opened up since 2020.

A nation reaches space through an agency; it builds a space economy through a market. India’s private launch is the moment the second one becomes real.

By the Numbers

• Milestone: Skyroot’s Vikram-1 — India’s first private orbital rocket (~450 km orbit)
• Peer group: third country, after the US and China, with a private orbital launch
• Capital: Skyroot the first Indian space firm to a ~$1 bn valuation
• Enabler: the 2020 opening of the sector; ISRO as anchor and partner

For investors, the space economy is an early-stage but structurally attractive theme: launch, satellite manufacturing, earth-observation data and downstream applications from agriculture to logistics. The milestones to track are the unglamorous ones — launch cadence and reliability, the cost per kilogram to orbit, contracted payload pipelines, and the test infrastructure and regulation that let young firms scale. As with any frontier industry, the risks are real: capital intensity, technical setbacks and a global market in which India is a late but fast entrant.

The constructive read is that India is building a genuine commercial space capability on top of a proven public one — an unusual and valuable combination. The way forward is to protect that partnership: keep opening ISRO’s facilities and know-how, supply patient capital and clear rules, and let private firms compete on cost and speed. Handled with that care, a start-up’s first orbit is not a one-off headline but the opening quarter of a new Indian industry.
