A Record Quarter on Wheels: PV Dispatches Jump, EVs Race Ahead

Blitz India Business

NEW DELHI: Lead with the number. India’s passenger-vehicle dispatches from factories to dealers rose about 24% year-on-year in June to roughly 3.88 lakh units, according to the industry body SIAM — capping a record April-June quarter in which passenger-vehicle volumes hit their highest-ever first-quarter total, near 1.27 million units, up about 26% on a year earlier. After a patchy stretch for the sector, that is a broad, data-backed signal of demand finding its feet again.

Read the drivers and the mix. Industry attributes the strength to supportive domestic demand, lower GST rates on vehicles, softer financing costs and a wave of new-model launches — a healthy combination of policy tailwind and product cycle. Underneath the headline, the electric shift kept accelerating: retail sales of electric passenger vehicles more than doubled year-on-year to about 31,800 units in June, lifting the EV share of the passenger-car market to roughly 7.7%, up from 6.6% in May and 4.8% a year earlier. Volume and transition are, for once, moving in the same direction.

Demand and transition together: June PV dispatches rose ~24% to ~3.88 lakh units and Q1 FY27 set a record ~1.27 mn PVs, per SIAM — while electric passenger-car sales more than doubled to lift EV share to ~7.7%.

A strong sales month is a demand signal; a rising EV share within it is a structural one. When both climb together, the industry is not just selling more — it is changing.

By the Numbers

• June PVs: dispatches ~3.88 lakh units, up ~24% year-on-year (SIAM)
• Q1 FY27: record ~1.27 million passenger vehicles, up ~26% YoY
• EVs: electric PV retail more than doubled to ~31,800 units in June
• EV share: ~7.7% of passenger cars (vs 6.6% May, 4.8% a year earlier)

For investors, the read-through runs across the value chain: volume for original-equipment makers, a widening order book for component suppliers, and a clear premium on the firms best positioned for the electric transition — batteries and cells, charging networks and the finance that keeps a first EV purchase affordable. Those enablers are also the bottlenecks: charging density, localised cell supply and resale confidence are where the next leg of both the opportunity and the risk will sit. A record quarter raises the bar for the supply side to keep pace.

The constructive read is that India’s largest manufacturing sector is running with genuine momentum and a real, self-reinforcing move to electric — more models, more categories, steadily better economics. The way forward is to widen the enablers, deepen the domestic supply chain so more of each vehicle’s value is made at home, and keep the policy signal steady so the product cycle and the transition reinforce each other. Handled that way, a record quarter becomes a durable base rather than a peak.
