Blitz India Business
The capex figure that anchors India’s chip ambition is ~$11 billion — the estimated investment behind Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera, Gujarat, India’s first front-end fab. The milestone the project is racing toward is “first silicon,” the first working wafers off the line, currently targeted for around the end of 2026.
The building blocks landed through the year: the government notified a special economic zone for the project in April, and in May, Tata Electronics signed a strategic agreement with the Netherlands’ ASML — whose lithography systems are effectively indispensable to advanced chipmaking — to equip the 300-mm plant. India’s packaging side is already commercial, with a Sanand facility having shipped the country’s first made-in-India chip modules late last year.
Capability as capex: A ~$11 bn fab aimed at end-2026 first silicon would place India among a small club of chip-making economies.
For a manufacturing economy, a fab is the ultimate import-substitution play — and the ultimate test of execution. The market will price the yield curve, not the ribbon-cutting.
By the Numbers
• Investment: ~$11 bn (Tata Electronics, Dholera)
• Type: India’s first front-end 300-mm wafer fab
• Partner: ASML equipment pact, May 2026
• Target: first silicon around end-2026
The investment logic is demand pull as much as policy push. Chips are the input into India’s fast-growing automotive electronics, mobile, industrial and AI segments, and a domestic fab shortens supply chains while seeding a high-value ecosystem of materials, gases and specialist labour. For component suppliers and equipment vendors, the Dholera build-out is a multi-year order book, not a single event.
The honest caveat is that fabs are unforgiving on yield and timelines, and first silicon is a beginning rather than a payoff. The constructive read is that India has committed the capital and lined up the technology partners for the right hard problem; the way forward is a deepening talent pipeline and a supplier base that lets the capex compound into a durable industry.
