CII Condemns Pahalgam Attack, Calls for Protection of Livelihoods and Economic Activity

NEW DELHI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, expressing deep condolences to the families of those killed and urging authorities to safeguard economic activity in the region.

“This mindless act of violence, targeting innocent tourists, has not only claimed lives but shaken the peace and stability of the region,” said CII President Sanjiv Puri in a statement.

He emphasized that ensuring citizens’ safety must remain the top priority. “Attacks like these must be met with the strongest response. India is resilient, and we must ensure such incidents do not derail livelihoods or the local economy,” Puri added.

Following the attack, the Kashmir Valley came to a standstill. Shops, transport, schools, and other institutions were shut in a unified show of grief and solidarity, with the shutdown supported by local traders, industry groups, political parties, and religious organizations.

The timing of the attack is particularly grim. The summer tourist season — a crucial source of income for Kashmir — had just begun. Tourism remains the backbone of the region’s economy.

Puri reaffirmed the industry’s commitment to stand with the government and local communities. “CII and Indian Industry are united with both central and state authorities, and all stakeholders, in resisting efforts to destabilize our nation’s security and prosperity.”

The attack occurred in Baisaran Valley, a picturesque spot located a few kilometers from Pahalgam market, accessible only by foot or horseback. Terrorists, hiding in nearby forests, opened fire on a group of unarmed tourists, killing over two dozen people.

Security forces have launched a large-scale combing operation in and around the valley to track down those behind the attack.
