The Office to the World: How Services Became India’s Export Engine

Blitz India Business

Beneath every monthly trade print runs a deeper, more permanent shift in how India earns abroad. In FY26, India’s services exports reached a record $421.3 billion, up 8.71% on the year, lifting the country’s total exports of goods and services to an all-time high of about $863 billion — and pushing the share of services to nearly 49% of all exports. Quietly, over two decades, services have become the engine of India’s external economy.

The trajectory is the story. Services exports have climbed from around $158 billion in FY15 to $421 billion in FY26, compounding at close to 9.3% a year and consistently outpacing merchandise. The base has broadened well beyond the classic software-and-IT image: engineering and design, research, consulting, finance, legal and accounting, and the global capability centres that the world’s largest firms now run from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Gurugram. It is an export that ships over a data line, needs no port, and runs a structural surplus that cushions the goods deficit.

An export with no port: Services hit a record $421 bn in FY26 — nearly half of all exports — spanning IT, engineering, finance and the global capability centres run from India’s cities.

India’s biggest export success travels down a fibre line, not across a dock. Services are the surplus that quietly steadies the whole external account.

The Long View

• FY26 services exports: record $421.3 bn, +8.71% YoY
• Total exports (goods + services): record ~$863 bn
• Share: services ~48.8% of all exports (from ~34% in FY15)
• Growth: ~9.3% CAGR over 12 years, outpacing merchandise

The honest account names what must be tended as the sector scales. Services trade is exposed to global demand cycles, to shifts in how work is automated, and to the visa and data rules of client countries — so the edge has to be defended with skills, not taken for granted. The talent pipeline in engineering, data, design and finance must keep deepening; the gains have to spread beyond a handful of metros into tier-two cities; and the value ladder has to keep rising from back-office execution toward research, product and high-end design.

The constructive, long-view read is that services are among India’s most valuable and resilient economic assets — a genuine surplus in a world of goods deficits, built on human capital rather than commodities. The way forward is to invest relentlessly in that capital, widen the map of where these jobs are created, and climb the value chain into higher-margin work. Handled with that ambition, “the office to the world” becomes not just a description of what India does today, but the platform for the higher-value export economy of the next decade.
