24% and a Record Quarter: The Auto Cycle Turns Up

Blitz India Business

The volume data is decisive. Domestic passenger-vehicle wholesales rose 24.1% year-on-year in June to 3,88,144 units, per SIAM, capping the industry’s best-ever first quarter at roughly 1.27 million units, up 25.9%. Two-wheelers — the wider demand gauge — grew 18.6%, and total vehicle exports jumped 34%. After a patchy couple of years, the cycle has turned up, and the slope is steep.

Segment structure shows the shape of the demand. Utility vehicles led again, up 19.9% to 2,17,228 units, with passenger cars up 15.7% to 98,610 and vans a steadier 9.5%. Overlay the electric story — June EV sales across categories past three lakh units, with electric cars roughly doubling year-on-year — and a single month captures both a cyclical upswing and a structural shift. For component makers, financiers and power utilities, a record quarter reprices the runway.

Cycle up, record set: June PV wholesales +24.1% and a 1.27-million-unit first quarter mark the strongest start on record — utility vehicles leading, exports up a third.

In autos, the read is in the run-rate. A record quarter with exports up a third says the demand signal is domestic and global at once.

By the Numbers

• June PV wholesales: 3,88,144 units, +24.1% YoY
• Q1 FY27: ~1.27 million units, +25.9% — a record quarter
• Mix: UVs +19.9%; cars +15.7%; two-wheelers +18.6%; exports +34%
• Electric: June EVs past 3 lakh; e-cars ~doubled YoY
The investment case broadens beyond the carmakers. Rising volumes pull capital toward the whole chain — steel and tyres, electronics and semiconductors, cells and charging, and the financing that puts a vehicle on the road. The two-wheeler strength is the tell that demand is reaching smaller towns and rural India, not just metros. The watch-items are input costs, the chip supply that feeds modern vehicles, and whether firmer inflation nicks the consumer-financing that underpins the upcycle.

The constructive read is that the industry is running its conventional and electric engines together — a record volume base plus a fast-rising EV share. The way forward pairs affordable finance and a denser charging grid with a deeper home-grown supply chain in batteries and chips, so a record quarter compounds into a durable, higher-value industry. For investors, the opportunity is widening from the vehicle to the ecosystem it depends on.
